Sorafenib is an oral targeted kinase inhibitor used to treat advanced renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer), unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer), and radioactive iodine-resistant differentiated thyroid cancer.

How to Take It

  • Form & Dosage: It is available as a 200 mg tablet. The standard dosage is typically 400 mg (two tablets) taken twice daily.
  • Administration: Tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. It is generally recommended to take sorafenib either on an empty stomach or with a low-to-moderate-fat meal, as a high-fat meal can reduce the drug’s absorption and efficacy.

Common Side Effects

  • Dermatological: Hand-foot skin reaction (redness, pain, or peeling on the palms and soles), rash, and dry skin.
  • Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and decreased appetite.

Description

Sorafenib is an oral targeted kinase inhibitor used to treat advanced renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer), unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer), and radioactive iodine-resistant differentiated thyroid cancer.

Medical Uses & Mechanism
Sorafenib is classified as an antiangiogenic and antineoplastic (cancer) agent. It targets multiple intracellular and cell-surface kinases—including VEGFR, PDGFR, and RAF kinases. By interrupting these signals, the drug stops or slows the division of cancer cells and starves the tumor by cutting off its blood supply.
